U22: Suite Caroline – What it’s like to have corporate sponsors!

What is it like having corporate sponsors?

Hi. It’s me again. Suite Caroline. I hope you have enjoyed reading about some of the stuff I have been up to. It actually gives me time to reflect on everything going on in my life. Us songwriters like that kind of thing. :) Anyway, I thought I would tell you what it is like to have corporate sponsors, like GTE Federal Credit Union. Well, in a word, it’s “cool.” Make that two words.. “totally cool.” You see, at first it was just all about me and writing some songs. Then it was about getting a band together. Now it is about being a part of a business organization that supports me and offers me some killer opportunities. I have gotten to know the people at GTE FCU very well. I even met the President of the whole company! I love promoting their credit union because they are so interested in kids. If you haven’t checked out the U22 program, click this link, www.U224U.com. If you are from age 12 (like me) to age 22 it might be just what you need to get good things going with saving and banking. Even if you don’t have a whole lot of money to manage, you need to have it somewhere safe, right? And whenever you need it, it only takes a swipe of your U22 debit card to get it! And it makes me feel like a VIP when I can use a debit card that is actually mine! As a matter of fact, I just used it to buy my Halloween costume. (I am going to be an M&M. The blue one.) BTW, I plan to say “Trick or Chocolate” this Halloween, instead of “Trick or Treat!”. BBYYEE!!!!

U22’s Alex – Top 10 Saving Tips for Teens

It can be really challenging for us teens and young adults to save money nowadays. This is why I’ve decided to give you my top ten list of money saving tips that will help you get closer to your goal. I know… thank me later. Here are my first 5!

10). Saving your spare change
I know you’ve all probably heard this before, but it really works. Saving those quarters, dimes and nickels really add up after a while. I actually saved up about 50 dollars worth of change once. So start pulling out those piggy banks.

9). Be Creative!
This tip helps me a whole lot because I’ve been very cheap ever since I started saving for my car. All you have to do is use stuff you have lying around the house for things you normally wouldn’t use them for. For example, instead of buying a mouse pad for my computer, I use a newspaper. If you do this your kinda recycling at the same time, and if you want to go for the trifecta you can actually read the newspaper!! So you’ll be well informed and green at the same time YAY!!

8.) Eating left-overs
This tip is a challenge for me because I sometimes hate eating left-overs (especially if its rice or fries eww), but it can actually save you some money. If you divide your meal so that you have some for later, then you can enjoy two meals for the price of one! “Wow that is soo easy Alex!” I know right!!!

7.) Re-discover your old stuff
If you guys are anything like me, then chances are you have a lot of stuff you don’t use anymore. Like clothes, books, games, and all sorts of things. Well what I do is go through that big pile of stuff and see if I can use it again. Many times I buy new stuff and I forget that my old things can still have a lot of value to them. So before you go buy something new try reading that book that you remember nothing about or playing through that old video game that you used to have fun with. You never know, you may re-discover something amazing.

6.) Driving Less
This one is self explanatory. Gas is expensive so no more joy rides. Just be aware of the gas you plan on using.

U22 Top 10 Money Myths Held by Teens Part 2

More than blogging about the 10 Teen Money Myths, I’ve also been speaking to many parents while out at football games and school events. The response is the same, stirring great concern about their misguided beliefs especially in regards to credit’s affect on getting a job.
Over the years some important changes have been made to how financial institutions issue credit and loans, establish interest rates and report to credit bureaus. Some changes are good, some not. This is where knowledge is key!

Myth 2: Bad Credit Can’t Keep Me from Getting a Job
Do you see that security camera up there in the corner? Have you read the news? At work crime has risen each year, therefore more employers are expanding all security measures including background and credit checks.

If your teen seeks a career in accounting, finance, fundraising, politics… basically any position in which they will manage money, their credit will certainly play a role in whether or not they are considered for a job. The state laws vary; however in general employers can legally deny a position based upon your credit but are required to show their source of information to the rejected job applicants.

Myth 3: All Loan Companies Have the Same Rates
Just as individual as you and I are, so are loan rates especially when comparing credit unions to banks. First, we all know your credit score is their first consideration. Gone are the days when you could obtain a loan regardless of your credit, (much of the reason behind today’s economic strife but that’s another day, another blog).

I reminded my teens that great credit earns the better interest rates whether you seek a loan at a bank or a credit union. Following that I share with you a basic comparison of banks to credit unions. Simply put, banks are “for profit, often publicly traded companies” vs. credit unions which are member-owned, not-for-profit organizations. Just the mere words “not-for-profit” and as banks are “for profit” clearly states how revenue flows within an organization and how much the customer pays for their operations.
Being member-owned, they have a stated goal of providing services to their membership resulting in fewer hassles and more competitive loan rates. I read an interesting survey that appeared in Consumer Reports lauding the top credit unions for their customer service, rates and fees.

Myth 4: It’s OK To Make Minimum Payments on Credit Cards
There is a credit card balance calculator that I discovered at www.bankrate.com that gave a frightening example that really hits home with why minimum payments are a bad idea.
First, if you are in debt, any financial planner will tell you to pay off your high interest rate debt first. That would be the balance on your credit cards!

So I broke it down with this example:
With a credit card balance $2,000 (by the way this is below the national average)
Interest rate 12%
The minimum payment would be $39.80

It will take you 169 months (16 years) to be rid of your debt. In that time, you will have paid $1,557.62 in interest! See for yourself at: http://www.bankrate.com/calculators/managing-debt/minimum-payment-calculator.aspx

To top that most people rotate their debt by making new purchases which add to the balance and therefore never pay off their debt. Imagine, since half of each payment goes to interest it’s much like paying double for every purchase you make on a credit card (if you pay only the minimum).
For once, my kids saw my point. That in itself was a golden moment.

Getting paid to do what I love? Pinch me!

Hello! My name is Caroline and this is my first official blog for U22! So excited!

For my first entry, I thought I would start off talking about a really special moment in my life. I still have the check. It is two years old, and it is only for $25 bucks, but I haven’t been able to part with it!!! It is pretty beat up because I’ve had it in my purse, hanging on my bulletin board, and I left it sitting on the kitchen counter a time or two. My first paycheck! I played at a place on the beach, and all of my friends came out, and for the first time, I REALLY felt what it was like to have energy from the crowd. Everyone was singing along with my songs!!! At the end of the night, the manager handed me the check. You get paid to have this much fun?? Coolio!!! There have been a lot of checks since then. But, what has changed is that I am learning to manage my money. I am really excited about all this, now that I opened my U22 account at GTE Federal Credit Union. To check out my page visitwww.u224u.com. I get my statements online, which is great. BUT THE BEST PART IS, I HAVE MY OWN MASTERCARD DEBIT CARD!!!!!! Whooaaaa…I really am gonna learn how to do this banking thing!!!!!!! I was thinking that since I have my account, it might be time to deposit that check…finally. The branch manager at my GTE FCU PROMISES me it will be safe there. I don’t think I can guarantee that on my kitchen counter!!! Talk to you all soon! And, if you ever want to talk more, e-mail me at Caroline@asku22.com

Let’s give a round of applause to Alex – U22 Open Casting Call WINNER!

Hey all!!! Wow, let me just start out by saying that I feel very privileged to be representing the U22 account. I wasn’t even gonna audition for the job, because I almost chickened out. I’m really glad I didn’t punk out. By the way, everyone did such a great job at the auditions. It must have been a really tough decision for the judges. If you haven’t seen the auditions yet, you should definitely check ‘em out at www.youtube.com/user/U22Audition. A friend of mine sent me a random text with the link saying, “Dude, check it out, you’re gonna be on TV!!” I actually laughed out loud (loled I guess you can say) when I read that, cuz I didn’t think I would get it. So thanx Gio for believing in me (Wow! that sounded super cheesy).

Anyway, I just want to sort of introduce myself in case you were thinking, “Who is this loser?” Well, my name is Alex, and I really AM a broke college student. My car really ISN’T a hot ride, so it’s good I’m learning more about money. The decisions I make now could really affect how much my future car payment will be when I think about it – financing and credit scores, geez. My future car though…that sounds nice, and now, I feel like it actually could be attainable! I’m a huge goofball, but I know when to be serious. I love the arts, especially music and acting. I’m originally from New York and New Jersey (went back and forth from both states) and I love the city. I moved to Florida to go to school, and I’m having a great time in college. I’m an aspiring actor and hope to graduate with a degree in fine arts. I’m not looking for fame and fortune, because they can just lead to so many problems. In the future I just hope to be doing what I love and just enjoying life. Well, I think I’ve blabbed on enough, but if you wanna know more about me, check out my bio or send me an e-mail me at Alex@asku22.com.

Check me and the U22 Account out at www.u224u.com.
